ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s tax authority wants to expand its income tax rules to cover all social media platforms, not just YouTube.
The Federal Board of Revenue has prepared draft notifications to change the Income Tax Rules, 2002. The change would replace the word “YouTube” with “social media platforms” in two separate rules related to income tax.
The first change would amend rule 13ZP in Chapter IIA of the Income Tax Rules, 2002. The second change would amend rule 19R in Chapter VA of the same rules.
If approved, the change would mean these tax rules apply to other social media services as well, not only YouTube. This could bring more online content creators and digital platforms under the tax system.
The FBR has asked anyone who may be affected by the proposed changes to share their objections or suggestions. Stakeholders have seven days from the publication of the draft notifications in the official Gazette to send their feedback.
The FBR will review the feedback received within this period before moving forward.
The proposed changes are still in draft form. They have not been finalized or brought into effect yet.
