KARACHI: Lucky Cement, one of Pakistan’s largest cement makers, has approved a 3.2 million-tonne-per-annum expansion of its Karachi plant, raising its installed cement capacity in Pakistan to 18.8 MTPA upon completion, the company said in a stock exchange filing Thursday.
The projects, approved by the board of directors on Oct. 28, are expected to begin commercial operations by December 2027 and will be integrated with a cement grinding facility currently being installed at the Karachi plant, the company said in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange.
“The approved projects collectively constitute a 3.20 MTPA brownfield expansion of production capacity at the Company’s Karachi plant,” the company said. “Upon completion of these projects, the Karachi plant’s installed cement capacity is expected to increase to 8.55 MTPA.”
Together with the installed capacity at its Pezu plant, the company’s total capacity in Pakistan is expected to reach 18.80 MTPA, it said.
The expansion comes amid domestic and growing export demand for cement and clinker, the company added.
Lucky Cement also approved energy projects across its Karachi and Pezu plants, including additional wind turbines with a combined capacity of 22.5 megawatts and a 10 MW waste heat recovery plant at the Karachi plant, as well as a 15 MW solar power plant and a 15 MW battery energy storage system at the Pezu plant.
Upon completion, the company’s renewable energy capacity for its cement operations is expected to meet approximately 60% of its energy requirements, including those of the new 3.20 MTPA expansion at the Karachi plant. The energy projects are scheduled for completion between the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2027 and the second quarter of fiscal year 2028.
Following the Karachi expansion and ongoing expansion at Nyumba Ya Akiba in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lucky Cement’s consolidated production capacity across Pakistan and its overseas operations is expected to reach 26.65 MTPA, the filing said.
“Following the successful completion of the brownfield expansion, the company expects to further consolidate its position as Pakistan’s largest cement manufacturer and exporter of cement and clinker, while continuing to expand its international footprint through its overseas operations,” it added.
