Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has stated that work on Pakistan Railways’ flagship Main Line-1 (ML-1) project is expected to begin in July 2026, with construction starting from Karachi Port.
According to sources, in a statement released on Tuesday, the Railways Minister said that under this initiative, a 54-kilometer railway section from Karachi Port Trust to Pipri will be upgraded to ensure uninterrupted cargo (freight) transportation. He further noted that Pakistan Railways plans to operate at least four freight trains daily within the next five months, prioritizing the transport of bulk cargo.
Sources reported that during his visit to Karachi on January 9, Hanif Abbasi held a key meeting with Chairman Karachi Port Trust Rear Admiral (Retired) Shahid Ahmed. The discussion focused on measures to strengthen the railway system for efficient cargo delivery from the port. The meeting emphasized shifting a significant portion of cargo transportation from roads to rail, thereby reducing pressure on the port and surrounding road networks.
Both sides agreed that rail-based freight is a cost-effective and sustainable solution to improve logistics performance and promote trade activities. Hanif Abbasi announced major reforms in the cargo delivery sector, stating that Pakistan Railways’ overall freight capacity will be significantly increased. He highlighted Karachi Port’s strategic importance in national and international trade and stressed the need for close coordination between Pakistan Railways and KPT to enhance port logistics performance.
Meanwhile, the KPT Chairman stated that KPT will modernize its internal railway lines and closely collaborate with Pakistan Railways to further strengthen the rail infrastructure connected to Karachi Port. Both parties agreed that improved railway connectivity will not only reduce pressure on roads and ports but also lower logistics costs, improve delivery times, and support the growth of trade, industry, and the national economy.
