In a major development for Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector, BF Biosciences Limited has introduced Zepetide, a locally manufactured dual-action therapy for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. The company announced this breakthrough on Tuesday through a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).
Zepetide is based on the FDA-approved drug Tirzepatide, which functions as a dual agonist for GLP-1 and GIP receptors, effectively controlling blood sugar levels and promoting weight loss.
According to the company, Zepetide will be available in pre-filled syringes manufactured using European technology at local facilities, ensuring accuracy, safety, and ease of use.
A spokesperson for BF Biosciences said, “We are proud to introduce a world-class, advanced therapy for Pakistani patients. This reflects our commitment to the local development of high-quality biopharmaceuticals.”
The company explained that the development of Zepetide was financed through funds raised in its Initial Public Offering (IPO), underscoring its strategy to reinvest in Pakistan’s healthcare system.
Pakistan has one of the highest diabetes prevalence rates in the world, with around 9 million people undiagnosed. Additionally, 57% of women and 41% of men are obese, significantly increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
BF Biosciences stated that the launch of Zepetide will not only provide patients with modern therapeutic options but will also mark a new milestone in the growth and innovation of Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry.
