The federal government has approved the Wheat Policy 2025-26, setting the procurement price for wheat at PKR 3,500 per 40 kilograms. This decision aims to provide fair profits to farmers, ensure national food security, and maintain strategic reserves.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, attended by key stakeholders including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti, Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, a representative of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, and the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
According to an official statement, federal and provincial governments will procure approximately 6.2 million tonnes of wheat from the 2025-26 crop to establish strategic reserves. Procurement will be carried out at the fixed price of PKR 3,500 per 40 kilograms, intended to provide fair compensation to farmers and maintain market stability.
To ensure wheat availability across the country, all restrictions on the movement of wheat between provinces have been lifted. A National Wheat Oversight Committee has been established to monitor the implementation of the wheat policy. This committee will be chaired by the Federal Minister for National Food Security and will include representatives from all provinces. It will meet weekly and report directly to the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that wheat is not only the staple food for the people of Pakistan but also the largest source of income for our farmers. Pakistan is an agrarian economy, and wheat holds a central position within it.
He emphasized that the government is fully aware of the challenges faced by farmers and is taking every possible step to ensure their welfare and protection. Farmers are the backbone of Pakistan’s economy.
The Prime Minister further said that the national wheat policy has been developed through a detailed consultative process with all stakeholders, including provincial governments, farmers’ organizations, industrialists, and the agricultural community. Based on these consultations, the government is announcing the National Wheat Policy 2025-26. This policy aims to ensure profitability for farmers and protect public interest.
He appreciated the cooperation of the provincial governments in formulating a consensus-based policy, stating that this policy will promote agricultural development, increase farmers’ income, and play a vital role in ensuring food security for the people of Pakistan.
