The death toll from the fire at Gul Plaza has risen to at least 55.
According to reports, South Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khoso said on Thursday that a total of 55 bodies have been recovered so far since the fire broke out late Saturday night.
Sources said families of missing persons have criticized the slow pace of the rescue and recovery operation at the three storey Gul Plaza, where rescue workers are searching through the debris for human remains.
Meanwhile, Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Syed told journalists that more than 50 families have provided DNA samples. According to sources, a young man standing outside the mortuary at Civil Hospital Karachi said this was being done to give families some comfort and peace. “At least let us see them one last time, in whatever condition they are, so we can say a final goodbye.”
It is worth noting that a government committee has started an investigation, but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
