Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has said that under the government’s long term vision, Pakistan aims to become a one trillion dollar economy by 2035 through the “Uraan Pakistan” initiative. He was chairing the mid year review meeting of the Annual Plan 2025–26.
According to sources, while addressing the meeting, Ahsan Iqbal said a new approach is being introduced to make planning, monitoring, and implementation systems more effective. He explained that the Annual Development Plan is prepared every year at the time of the budget to set national economic targets and assess the performance of ministries. To make this process more results oriented, it has now been decided to review the Annual Plan on a quarterly basis so that national objectives can be achieved on time.
He stressed that governance is not only about achieving targets, but also about strengthening institutional capacity. Sources said he noted that the Annual Development Plan serves as a guiding framework for the economy and provides a clear path for achieving five year development goals.
The federal minister added that after the 18th Constitutional Amendment, most social and economic sectors fall under provincial jurisdiction, making close coordination between the federation and provinces essential for achieving national goals. He identified agriculture, services, information technology, and the social sector as key drivers of economic performance.
During the meeting, Chief Economist Dr Imtiaz Ahmed briefed participants on the social and economic impact of recent floods. He said that around 6.5 million people were affected, 3.3 million acres of crops were destroyed, and infrastructure suffered severe damage, resulting in an estimated economic loss of Rs 822 billion.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening effective planning and interprovincial coordination for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
