In the interbank market, the Pakistani rupee continued to strengthen against the US dollar on Friday.
According to reports, at 11:30 am the rupee improved by 22 paisa to reach 279.90 against the dollar. It is worth noting that the local currency had closed at 280.12 on Wednesday. The market remained closed on Thursday due to a bank holiday.
At the global level, after struggling against most major currencies last year, the US dollar started 2026 on a weaker note on Friday. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen remained steady near a 10 month low.
In early Asian trading, the euro held steady at 1.1752 dollars, after posting a strong 13.5 percent gain last year. The British pound traded at 1.3474 dollars, having risen 7.7 percent during 2025. Both currencies recorded their biggest annual gains since 2017.
The Japanese yen was at 156.74 against the US dollar. It is worth noting that during 2025, the yen gained less than one percent against the dollar and stayed close to its 10 month low of around 157.90.
