Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed relevant authorities to prepare and submit policy proposals for palm oil production along Pakistan’s coastal belt.

According to sources, the prime minister said the government is investing in research to increase per acre crop yields within available resources. He also asked for a comprehensive five year roadmap to boost fisheries, fruit exports, and value added products.

During a review meeting in Islamabad, Working Group Chairman Rana Naseem and his team presented a detailed report on challenges in the agriculture sector and future plans. The prime minister stressed that agricultural reforms and introducing farmers to global best practices are a top priority for the government.

He said the federal government, in coordination with provincial governments, is working to ensure the supply of high quality seeds, timely availability of fertilizer at reasonable prices, and protection of crops from diseases.

The prime minister also mentioned that recently one thousand Pakistani students were sent to China at government expense to receive training in modern agricultural technology, as Pakistan has huge potential in this sector.

The meeting was attended by federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Dr Musadik Malik, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, and other senior officials.
